Mental Health Treatment Options
in South Africa
South Africa offers a wide range of mental health treatments — from HPCSA-regulated psychiatry and psychology to traditional healing, Dianetics, and faith-based counselling. Under the National Health Act, you have the right to know all your options before consenting to treatment.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health. They can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and provide therapy. In South Africa, psychiatrists must be registered with the HPCSA.
Best for:
Psychologists and psychotherapists provide assessment, diagnosis, and therapy for mental health conditions. They use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). HPCSA registration is required.
Best for:
Dianetics is a self-improvement methodology developed by L. Ron Hubbard. It uses a process called auditing to address the effects of past traumatic experiences (engrams) on the mind. Dianetics practitioners are not HPCSA-regulated.
Best for:
Traditional healers (sangomas, inyangas, izinyanga) play a significant role in mental health care for many South Africans. The Traditional Health Practitioners Act (Act 22 of 2007) regulates traditional healers in South Africa. Many people use traditional healing alongside conventional treatment.
Best for:
Pastoral counselling and faith-based therapy integrate spiritual principles with mental health support. Many South Africans find their faith community to be an important source of support. Faith-based counsellors may or may not hold formal mental health qualifications.
Best for:
Psychiatric medications (antidepressants, anxiolytics, mood stabilisers, antipsychotics) are prescribed by psychiatrists and GPs. They can be effective for many conditions but come with side effects and should be used alongside therapy where possible.
Best for:
Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation and focused attention to address psychological issues. It is used for anxiety, phobias, and habit change. Hypnotherapists in South Africa are not regulated by the HPCSA unless they also hold a psychology qualification.
Best for:
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBSR, MBCT) have strong evidence for reducing anxiety and depression. They can be practised independently or as part of therapy. Many psychologists integrate mindfulness into their practice.
Best for:
ECT is a medical procedure used for severe, treatment-resistant depression and certain other conditions. It is administered under general anaesthetic in a hospital setting. ECT is highly regulated and only available through psychiatrists in South Africa.
Best for:
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. Some research suggests it may help with anxiety and depression, though evidence is mixed. Acupuncturists in South Africa are regulated by the Allied Health Professions Council.
Best for:
Life coaches help people set and achieve personal and professional goals. They are not mental health professionals and cannot diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Life coaching is unregulated in South Africa — anyone can call themselves a life coach.
Best for:
Peer support groups provide community, shared experience, and mutual support for people with mental health conditions. SADAG runs support groups across South Africa. Support groups are not a substitute for professional treatment but can be a valuable complement.
